International Renewable Energy Agency The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organisation that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, with a specific focus on renewable energy. In 2019, the IEA and IRENA further enhanced existing cooperative efforts between the two organisations by signing a Memorandum of Understanding that builds upon a previous agreement signed in 2012.The two agencies have a long-standing collaboration on data...

                The future of energy security

As risks multiply around the world, energy security has rapidly climbed to the top of the political agenda – leaving policymakers to navigate an increasingly complex mix of traditional threats and emerging vulnerabilities. This episode features conversations with Tan See Leng, Singapore’s Minister for Manpower and Minister-in-Charge of Energy, Science and Technology, and Leila Benali, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development. Speaking on the sidelines of the IEA’s 2026 Ministerial Meeting, they discuss the fast-evolving energy security challenges facing their countries and the measures they are taking to tackle them. IEA Chief Energy…

Joint Statement in Support of the IEA-Ukraine Collaboration Programme

The extensive damage to critical civilian and energy infrastructure across Ukraine is a direct result of Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine. The intensification of Russian attacks on critical energy infrastructure in Ukraine throughout 2025, in particular, has had severe consequences for the daily lives of the civilian population and these attacks have continued to rise in both scale and intensity this winter. The IEA-Ukraine Collaboration Programme – in parallel with other international donor efforts, including those coordinated through the G7+ Ukraine Energy Support Group – represents a key initiative through which the IEA is able to support Ukraine…

                Heat Planning Act

The Heat Planning Act requires local competent authorities to develop a plan to decarbonise the heat supply by 2045. The deadline to submit the first plan is June 2026 for large municipalities and June 2028 for smaller municipalities. It is supposed to be updated every five years and includes an analysis of potential sources for renewable energy or waste heat. The plan is not legally binding, but rather has a coordinating function for local stakeholders. It analyses heating appliances and energy demand for heating, potentials for renewable energy, trajectories to achieve the goal of climate neutrality with milestones as well…
