Denmark National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP)

The plan outlines strategies to meet EU Energy Union goals across five key dimensions: decarbonisation and renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy security, internal energy market, and research, innovation, and competitiveness. The plan includes updates and projections for greenhouse gas emissions, energy prices, and the impact of existing measures, aiming to ensure a stable and sustainable energy future.

                Climate Act - Denmark's coal phase-out

Denmark is set to ban coal-based electricity production by 2028, closing the Nordjyllandsværket power station by this date. This phase-out goes along with the repeated commitment of reducing by 70% GHG emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels set in the Climate Act in 2020.

                Denmark's REPowerEU

Denmark's latest Recovery and Resilience Plan now includes a REPowerEU Chapter which contains one new reform, two new investments and two upscaled investment. Denmark has to transfer to the plan part (€66 million) of its Brexit Adjustment Reserve allocation. These funds will be added to Denmark’s REPowerEU grants of €131 million.

Denmark’s oil and gas exploration ban

In December 2020 the Danish government reached an agreement with a broad majority in the Danish Parliament to phase out fossil fuel extraction in the country by 2050, starting with the cancelation of its 8th licensing round as well as all future bid rounds. North Sea production has historically been an important economic driver for Denmark, contributing around EUR 0.8 billion in revenues in 2019. The agreement also commits the government to ensuring a just transition for impacted regions and the approximately 4 000 workers (direct and indirect) currently employed by the oil and gas industry. As part of…

                Denmark community ownership of renewables

A significant part of Denmark’s remarkable success with wind power generation has been its promotion of community ownership of wind farms. The community ownership has helped wind turbines overcome challenges such as limited space, costs and resistance to visual and noise impacts as local communities directly profit from power generation. For example, the Middelgrunden wind facility (20 turbines), which completed construction in 2000, invited private investment from local citizens. Ultimately, 8 650 Danes raised EUR 23 million to finance half the project’s cost and become 50% equity participants (the municipal utility owned the other half). The project’s…

                Denmark’s Youth Climate Council

…for Danish youth to bring innovative thinking and inputs to the climate politics. The initiative was deployed at the request of the Danish Youth Delegates and the Youth Council (an umbrella organisation of 75 youth-led Danish organisations, including for example scouts, student councils and all political youth parties). The Council currently consists of fifteen young volunteers with different educational and occupational backgrounds responsible for collecting the views of young people all over Denmark in order to formulate concrete proposals. The Council can feed these proposals directly into the development of climate policies, most notably through meetings with the Minister.

                Denmark Citizens’ Assembly

Denmark's Citizens' Assembly on Climate Issues is a civilian council that was formed with the objective of involving a representative selection of the Danish population in the planning of the country’s climate policies. The Citizens' Assembly consists of 99 members selected to best represent the Danish population, based on socio-economic criteria, such as age, gender, geography, education and income. In April 2021, after months of debate and discussion, the Citizens' Assembly tentatively adopted 119 recommendations for the green transition, which have been shared with the Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities as well as the Climate, Energy…
