Southern African Development Community (SADC) Free Trade Area

The SADC Free Trade Area entered into force in 2007. The agreement fully or partially eliminates import tariff for most energy products and technologies, including: Electric motors, turbines and generators; Mechanical equipment including pumps, appliances, and other advanced machinery; Electric accumulators, transformers, capacitors, batteries; Motor vehicles; Mineral ore, slag and ash; Mineral fuels, oils and other products; Metals and their articles e.g. iron and steel; Semiconductors devices and photovoltaic cells; Rules of origin include provisions preventing goods only undergoing minimal transformations in one of the signatory countries or incorporating materials of external origin valued above 15 per cent of…

The Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and MERCOSUR Preferential Agreement entered into force in 2016. The agreement fully or partially eliminates import tariff for most energy products and technologies, including: Nitrogen fertilisers, including Urea, whether or not in aqueous solution;Battery cells, including other lead-acid accumulators; Semiconductor, including other types of photo-diode and transistor;Heat pumps; For the products listed above, the agreement qualifies the product as originating and thus benefitting from preferential tariff treatment if the total value of non-originating materials used does not exceed 50% of the price of the product.

                South African biofuels regulatory framework

The South African Biofuels Regulatory Framework provides a regulatory framework for the implementation of the Biofuels Industrial Strategy of 2007 (BIS). The targeted biofuels penetration is 4.5% v/v of the national fuel pool with 2% expected to come from first generation biofuels technologies. The document mentions five angle to the Biofuels Regulatory Framework:The Feedstock Protocol will regulate the agricultural production of biofuels feedstock to mitigate the risk of the biofuels program to food security. The mandatory blending regulations: compelling licensed manufacturers and wholesalers of petroleum products to buy and blend locally produced bioethanol and biodiesel at a…

South African Energy Efficiency Label - Tumble Dryers

Appliance standards and Labelling has two objectives:
To ensure that appliances sold on the South African market meet minimum energy performance standards.
To ensure that consumers can easily understand the likely energy consumption of an appliance before purchasing the appliance.

South African Energy Efficiency Label - Electric Ovens

To protect consumers from purchasing inefficient electric ovens, Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) have been set for electric ovens. Currently, only large electric ovens with an Energy Efficiency Rating of Class B or better can be sold. With regards to small/medium electric ovens, an Energy Efficiency Rating of Class A or better can be sold.
