Lighting Africa solar lantern project in Burkina Faso

The Lighting Africa initiative was set up to address the limits to education and economic opportunity that come with lack of access to modern energy services. Part of the World Bank Group’s contribution to SEforAll, Lighting Africa has expanded basic electricity access through off-grid solar solutions to 32.3 million people across the continent, starting with pilot projects in Ghana and Kenya in 2009. Part of the Lighting Africa’s USD 1.5 million effort to expand off-grid solar access in Burkina Faso is a programme to offer solar lanterns to libraries in rural schools through partnerships…

South Africa’s Low-Emission Development Strategy (SA LEDS) 2050

South Africa’s Low-Emission Development Strategy (SA LEDS) 2050 is based on years of work on climate change in the country. To support SA’s climate change response, the country published a National Climate Change Response Strategy in 2004 (DEA, 2004). This was followed by extensive scientific research and analyses to inform SA’s policy approach on climatechange.

The SA LEDS 2050 aims to succinctly build upon this foundation and articulate the path going forward in order to place  the  country  on a low-carbon  trajectory,  while  at  the  same  time  ensuring  broader  socio-economic development. The  Strategy  narrates…

The South African-German Energy Programme (SAGEN) is part of the bilateral cooperation between South Africa and Germany. SAGEN is funded by the German Government and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Additional funding for energy efficient streetlights in provided by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). SAGEN is focused on improving the implementation of policies and strategies to stimulate investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Integrated Energy Plan for the Republic of South Africa

South Äfricas Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) was adopted on 19 March 2003. It focuses on South Africas energy needs from a holistic prospective and seeks to determine to what extent reliance should be placed on different energy sources such as coal, gas, renewable energy and nuclear energy. It addresses energy demand balanced with energy supply, transformation, economics and environmental considerations in concurrence with available resources. In addition, the IEP highlights the need for government to promote energy efficiency management and technology, lessen reliance on imported liquid fuels by exploring and developing oil and gas deposits and to continue with existing…
