Data centre electricity use surged in 2025, even with tightening bottlenecks driving a scramble for solutions
…from April 2025, the new analysis published today finds that the field has continued to develop at speed. Driven by data centre investments, the capital expenditure of five large technology companies surged to more than $400 billion in 2025 and is set to increase by a further 75% in 2026. Data are in thousand barrels per day and include 6-18 month forecasts.This new dataset combines OECD and non-OECD demand data into a single, harmonised dataset including more granularity for non-OECD countries (demand available by product and by month).
