The European Union has been implementing restrictive measures against Syria since 2011, including the following energy sector related ones: Import ban on crude oil and petroleum products from Syria; Ban on investment in the Syrian oil industry; Ban on investment in companies engaged in the construction of new power plants for electricity production in Syria;Prohibition to participate in the construction of new power plants, including related technical or financial assistance; Ban on exports to Syria of key equipment and technology for the oil and gas industry; Import ban on crude oil and petroleum products from Syria.

The IEA’s largest ever emergency oil stock release
The global oil market is facing the most severe disruption in its history, with the war in the Middle East largely halting energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical trade chokepoint. In response to this disruption, IEA Member countries agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil from their emergency stocks – the largest collective action since the Agency’s founding more than 50 years ago.
