GlobalABC Regional Roadmap for Buildings and Construction in Africa 2020-2050
Towards a zero-emission, efficient and resilient buildings and construction sector The GlobalABC Roadmap for Buildings and Construction in Africa sets out targets and timelines towards achieving zero emission, efficient and resilient buildings and construction between 2020 and 2050 in Africa. The Roadmap covers eight themes, including urban planning, new buildings, existing buildings, building operations, appliances and systems, materials, resilience, and clean energy. For each of these themes, priority actions related to policy and technology are identified as well as other enabling activities including capacity building and finance. This Roadmap was developed in collaboration with the GlobalABC and UN Environment…

Climate Impacts on African Hydropower
…the share of hydropower in electricity generation exceeds 80%. This share may potentially increase to more than 23% by 2040, as part of the ongoing effort towards clean energy transition and universal energy access in Africa. Reliance on hydropower without assessing future climate impacts may increase risk Expanding the share of hydropower in Africa may increase a country’s exposure to climate hazards and risks to electricity systems if carried out without assessing the potential impacts of climate change. Africa is one of the regions most susceptible to climate change. The continent is already experiencing increased anomalies in climate patterns…

Clean Energy Transitions Programme 2023
…systems this century. The CETP’s work is structured across three pillars of activity, with a particular focus on emerging markets and developing economies. The first of these focuses on supporting emerging and developing countries to establish clean energy transition goals, in line with the objectives of the 2015 Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations. The second pillar centres on facilitating coordination among multilateral organisations such as the Group of 20 (G20) and UN-affiliated collaborations. The final pillar showcases the IEA’s work at a global level to enable and accelerate clean energy…

Clean Energy Transitions in the Greater Horn of Africa
…committed to helping African countries use energy sector transformation to cope with and recover from crises such as the Covid‑19 pandemic and the Russian Federation’s (“Russia” hereafter) invasion of Ukraine, which have destabilised economies and energy systems. This can be done by improving data, informing decision making and guiding policy implementation, in collaboration with local, regional and international institutions. This report focuses on the eight countries in the greater Horn of Africa region, here defined as Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda. It recommends pathways to accelerate clean energy transitions and analyses energy trends across the region…

Financing the ASEAN Power Grid
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has a long history of electricity system connectivity, and the development of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) is central to achieving a sustainable, secure and affordable energy transition across the region. Delivering the APG will require a significant step‑change in investment over the coming 15 years, and unlocking financing from a diverse range of sources will be essential for this to happen. Yet financing approaches and business models have not evolved at the pace required to support an increasingly ambitious and complex pipeline of interconnector projects. This report examines how interconnectors are approached…

Integrating Solar and Wind in Southeast Asia
…the region possesses vast and diverse renewable resource potential. Variable renewable energy (VRE) - solar and wind - are now among the most cost-competitive generation options and are playing an increasingly important role in the region’s power sector. VRE presents an opportunity for the region to meet rising demand, support energy security, affordability and climate goals. However, integrating higher shares of VRE can present technical and regulatory challenges that require changes to system operation and planning. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the readiness of Southeast Asia’s power sector to integrate higher shares of VRE - identifying opportunities and…

Financing the Modernisation of Power Systems Beyond Coal
…central component of power systems in Southeast Asia, even as governments have committed to reducing coal‑related emissions. Rapid electricity demand growth, alongside coal’s role in system adequacy, reliability and energy security, complicates efforts to accelerate coal transitions. Recent volatility in international gas markets has reinforced the short‑term economic and security value of existing coal assets, adding complexity to national transition strategies. The region’s young coal fleet also implies substantial long‑term emissions if plants continue operating at current utilisation rates.Against this backdrop, new approaches are being explored to support coal transitions while maintaining secure and reliable power systems…
