                Artificial intelligence and EVs

GEVO 2026 - Chapter 8 Progress in AI and computing power is disproportionately benefiting EVs, particularly for automated driving and integrated vehicle control. Sensors and chips integrate well with the stable, high-voltage power supply of EV batteries. At the same time, the benefits of AI and increased computing power are not exclusive to EVs. AI‑enabled energy management systems are increasingly used to optimise hybrid vehicles, and AI techniques are accelerating the design, testing and optimisation of all vehicles. Advances in AI underpin progress in autonomous vehicles Just two decades ago, state-of-the-art autonomous vehicles were confined to test…

…energy transition, towards its ambitious long-term goals and it stands at a pivotal moment in its energy journey, possessing remarkable renewable and critical mineral resources. The Chile 2050 Energy Transition Roadmap, produced at the request of the Government of Chile, and in close collaboration with the Chilean Ministry of Energy, sets out a detailed pathway for the country to reach its legally binding goal of net zero emissions by 2050 while expanding economic growth and improving energy security and affordability. This pathway relies on four pillars: accelerating energy efficiency, decarbonising the power sector, electrifying end-use sectors, and building…

Financing the Modernisation of Power Systems Beyond Coal

The role of transition credits in Southeast Asia Coal is a central component of power systems in Southeast Asia, even as governments have committed to reducing coal‑related emissions. Rapid electricity demand growth, alongside coal’s role in system adequacy, reliability and energy security, complicates efforts to accelerate coal transitions. Recent volatility in international gas markets has reinforced the short‑term economic and security value of existing coal assets, adding complexity to national transition strategies. The region’s young coal fleet also implies substantial long‑term emissions if plants continue operating at current utilisation rates.Against this backdrop, new approaches are being explored…

                Efficient Grid-Interactive Buildings in India

Status and opportunities This report assesses the opportunities for efficient grid-interactive buildings (EGIBs) to support India’s clean energy transition. EGIBs unite energy efficiency, smart digital technologies and demand-side flexibility, allowing them to optimise energy use, shift or reduce peak demand and better align consumption with renewable energy generation. The buildings sector is central to clean energy transitions in a context where rapidly increasing electricity demand is driven by cooling and appliance use, and the share of variable renewable energy in electricity generation is continuously growing. Without targeted action, unmanaged peak loads and variable supply could jeopardise grid…

…power sector This report is part of ongoing IEA collaboration with Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) partners to better understand the particular challenges these partners face in their energy transition and to provide a platform for co-operation among the AZEC partners. The report seeks to build a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the Philippine power sector, and to identify practical pathways that can help to strengthen its energy security, improve affordability and enable the country to achieve its long-term clean energy goals. This review has been prepared in collaboration with the Department of Energy (DOE) of…

                Autonomous vehicles

…Level 2 systems in private passenger cars today allow for hands-free navigation on autopilot (Level 2+). People’s Republic of China  (hereafter, “China”) and the United States are adopting these systems most quickly; 10% and 6%, respectively, of cars sold in 2025 in these countries were equipped with Level 2+ technology. In the United States, Level 2+ ADAS are either sold as premium features or via software subscription services, whereas in China they are often included in base models. With these systems, drivers are still required to be ready to instantly take full control over the vehicle whenever requested.Applications of…

Responding to Satellite Notifications from the Methane Alert and Response System

…to MARS notifications has led to the successful mitigation of methane leaks in several countries. However, the global response rate to MARS notifications remains relatively low, suggesting that further measures may be required to transform satellite alerts into actionable responses for governments. The IEA, in collaboration with IMEO, has prepared this technical guidance document to assist governments seeking to improve action on MARS notifications and reduce methane emissions within their territory. The document proposes a five-step sequential process for responding to MARS notifications: (1) receive, assign and classify the notification; (2) notify the operator associated with the emission event…

Energy Efficiency in China’s Buildings Sector

…progress in achieving them. Regulation for new buildings in China, such as building codes, is relatively strong. However, as the rate of construction is slowing, policy priorities are shifting towards retrofitting existing buildings. Here, the IEA estimates that through strong policy action and best-in-class technology, China could reduce energy consumption by up to 65% in buildings constructed between 1995 and 2010, representing energy savings of over 8 000 Petajoules. The report includes examples from across China and the world on leading regulatory instruments, financial incentives, and information-based tools that can drive energy efficiency in the buildings sector.
