Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2022
…access to modern energy by 2030 and reduces energy-related air pollution significantly. The NZE Scenario provides a global benchmark against which changes at the regional level can be assessed. The NZE Scenario would limit the rise in global average temperatures to 1.5°C (with a 50% probability). After a scene-setting discussion in the first chapter, the second chapter describes scenario projections across all fuels and technologies. The third chapter analyses four key areas in depth: investment for the clean energy transition, power sector decarbonisation focusing on system flexibility, low-carbon fuels, and the supply and demand of critical…

Is the biofuel industry approaching a feedstock crunch?
…renewable energy markets. Biodiesel, renewable diesel and biojet fuel producers are headed for a feedstock supply crunch during 2022-2027 if current trends do not change. In our main case, demand for vegetable oil, waste and residue oils and fats increases 56% to 79 million tonnes over the forecast period. Fuels made from wastes and residues are in particularly high demand because they satisfy GHG and feedstock policy objectives in the United States and Europe. In fact, wastes and residues are expected to be used for 13% of biofuel production in 2027, up from 9% in 2021. However, demand is…

Advancing Decarbonisation through Clean Electricity Procurement
…IEA’s regional power system models for India and Indonesia, the report applies quantitative analysis to examine the implications of different procurement strategies for emissions reduction, procurement costs and technology deployment. A key finding is that when companies set more granular goals – such as matching their electricity demand hourly (rather than annually as has been the dominant practice) – it can stimulate deployment of the wider portfolio of flexible technologies needed for net zero transitions in the power sector. The report aims to guide corporates in choosing impactful ways to procure clean electricity. It also highlights the roles of policy makers…
