Global EV Outlook 2020
…to inform policy makers and stakeholders that consider policy frameworks and market systems for electric vehicle adoption.
This edition also features an update on the performance and costs of batteries. It further extends the life cycle analysis conducted in Global EV Outlook 2019, assessing the technologies and policies that will be needed to ensure that EV battery end-of-life treatment contributes to the fullest extent to sustainability and CO2 emissions reductions objectives. Finally, it analyses how off-peak electricity demand charging, dynamic controlled charging (V1G) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) could mitigate the impact of EVs on peak demand…

Tracking Clean Energy Innovation: Focus on China
…In the People’s Republic of China (hereafter, “China”), support for innovation has significantly increased in the last two decades, as the country became the world’s manufacturing powerhouse for several key energy technology areas, such as solar photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines and batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). Looking forward, China’s focus on technology innovation and development is expected to strengthen, notably to deliver on long-term carbon neutrality objectives and position the country in global value chains for clean energy technologies. This has important implications for global policy discussions, as China’s ability to innovate effectively will have…

Unlocking the Economic Potential of Rooftop Solar PV in India
…can be introduced in India to achieve quick acceleration of RTS deployment?
5. How can residential and small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) consumers be effectively encouraged to invest in RTS?
6. How can a holistic policy approach for all distributed energy resources (DERs) be adopted to maximise the value of RTS in combination with electric vehicles (EVs) and storage? Executive summary The rooftop solar photovoltaic (RTS) sector plays a crucial role in achieving India’s ambitious renewable energy targets by 2022 and beyond. However, the progress of residential, commercial and industrial applications has been slow compared with utility-scale… -

China Power System Transformation
…Sustainable Development Scenarios. The modelling identifies the establishment of spot markets and trade between provinces as two of the main elements to improve system operation efficiency in China. In order to integrate very high shares of variable renewables consistent with the WEO SDS, activating the demand side – especially electric vehicles – and targeted use of electricity storage are found to be crucial for an accelerated transformation of the Chinese power system. Highlights The rise of low-cost wind and solar power, deployment of distributed energy resources (DER) and increasing digitalisation are accelerating change in power systems around the world, including the…

Transitioning India’s Road Transport Sector
Realising climate and air quality benefits India aims to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2070 – a demanding task given the country’s ambitious sustainable development objectives. Road transport currently accounts for a relatively small share in national CO2 emissions, but as India seeks to satisfy the mobility needs of its growing, urbanising and rapidly developing population, energy demand and CO2 emissions from the sector could double by 2050, locking in emissions and putting at risk the achievement of the long-term climate goal. This report, prepared at the request of India’s public think tank NITI Aayog, provides a…

Fuel economy in India
…are being replaced by gasoline vehicles. In 2017, diesel powertrains were 47% of LDV sales, and in 2019 were 40%, while gasoline powertrains grew to be 57% of LDV sales. Sales shares of electric, plug-in and hybrid vehicles remained negligible in 2019. Further, average LDV weight has increased 13% since 2005 in India, reaching 1 129 kg in 2019. City cars held a 55% sales share in 2019, while the share of SUVs/pick-ups grew from 17% in 2005 to 31% in 2019. Overview of current fuel economy policy Since 2014, India imposed passenger vehicle fuel-efficiency standards…

…accounting for 93% in 2019. However, shares of electric, plug-in and hybrid powertrains have continued to grow since 2005. In 2019, electric powertrains accounted for 3.2% of LDV sales, primarily in the city car segment. Hybrids accounted for 2% of LDV sales, while plug-in vehicles made up 1.1% of LDV sales in 2019. Overview of current fuel economy policy Phase I and II fuel consumption standards were first enforced in 2005 in China, requiring each vehicle model to meet specific fuel consumption thresholds. In 2011, Phase III standards introduced corporate average fuel consumption (CAFC) targets…

E4 Country Profile: Energy Efficiency in India
…standards and building codes in some states, coupled with growing energy access and new construction, resulted in policy coverage in the buildings sector of 13% in 2018. In the transport sector, the implementation of passenger car and heavy-duty vehicle standards increased the policy coverage to 6% in 2018. Ambitious plans have also been developed to increase the penetration of electric vehicles. Energy efficiency opportunities Under the Efficient World Scenario, the increase in energy demand could be limited to just 82% between now and 2040, as opposed to more than doubling in the NPS. This would avoid 10 EJ of…
