Thailand Power System Flexibility Study
With the growing share of renewable energy and emerging technologies, establishing and maintaining adequate flexibility is an important part of Thailand’s power system development and modernisation, and the country’s clean energy transition. Power system flexibility is crucial for ensuring security of supply.
Thailand’s power sector has two main avenues to enhance its flexibility. One is to enhance the technical flexibility of the system. The other is to change or reform commercial and contractual structures. This study examines flexibility from both the technical and contractual angle, and their interactions, using the current context of Thailand’s power system… -

Climate Impacts on South and Southeast Asian Hydropower
Hydropower accounts for 14.5% of total electricity generation in South and Southeast Asia, with a total hydropower installed capacity of 117 GW. The installed hydropower capacity is expected to grow further in order to meet the region’s growing electricity demand and electricity export opportunities, and to maximise the merits of a cost-effective and flexible low-carbon power source. However, climate change poses an increasing challenge to South and Southeast Asian hydropower with rising temperatures, extreme rainfall patterns, melting glaciers, and increasing occurrence of extreme weather events. This report aims to support South and Southeast Asian hydropower in…

The Potential Role of Carbon Pricing in Thailand's Power Sector
…heavily on fossil fuels to generate its electricity. However, it has committed to play its part in the international efforts to mitigate GHG emissions through its nationally determined contribution (NDC) and NDC roadmap. Thailand is currently preparing its first Climate Change Act. The introduction of a carbon price could help accelerate a transition to low-carbon energy, particularly in the power sector. Internalising the cost of carbon could provide incentives for a shift away from fossil fuel-based electricity. Based on an understanding of Thailand's regulated power market structure and key policies, this report assesses the potential role of…
