Implementing Gas Market Reforms in Brazil
…supports efficient resource allocation, and ensures transparent price discovery.Besides fostering competition and improving efficiencies, gas market reforms can support clean energy transitions. An open and transparent access to the gas network improves the physical flexibility and short-term deliverability of gas systems and as such can facilitate the integration of a higher share of variable renewables into the broader energy system. In addition, the open, non‑discriminatory grid access rules, enhanced operational transparency, flexible congestion management mechanisms and improved network interoperability made possible by these reforms will support the introduction of decentralised, small-scale and variable production of low-carbon…

Clean Energy Transitions Programme 2020
Annual report 2020 Since the launch of the Clean Energy Transitions Programme (CETP) in late 2017, the IEA has significantly expanded its work to help accelerate energy transitions in major emerging economies. The CETP is playing a critical role in supporting clean energy transitions, putting sustainable development at the heart of economic recovery measures and further strengthening the IEA family.
The CETP Annual Report 2020 highlights the programme’s main activities, presenting major outcomes and areas for further work as well as planned activities for 2021. It also summarises IEA activities related to clean energy transitions at a global level…

E4 Country Profile: Energy Efficiency in Brazil
…the region. Since 1990, energy sector CO2 emissions have more than doubled, with oil as the largest source of emissions (over 60%), followed by coal and natural gas (approximately 18% each). Challenges remain to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, including ensuring access to clean cooking and universal access to energy. While Brazil has one of the greatest shares of renewable energy in the world, this is coming under threat, as changing weather patterns and increasing demand place stress on the electricity system. In this context, advancing energy efficiency as an alternative to fossil fuel backup generation is particularly important. Improvements…

Fuel economy in Brazil
Market profile and analysis of fuel consumption trends Just over 2.6 million light-duty vehicles (LDVs) were sold in Brazil in 2019, marking a gradual rebound following a contraction from a high of 3.6 million sales in 2012 to a low of less than 2.0 million in 2016. Average fuel consumption of new LDVs fell from 8.5 litres of gasoline equivalent per 100 kilometres (Lge/100 km) in 2005 to reach 7.5 Lge/100 km in 2019, which is 5% above the global average. While the overall fuel consumption of new LDVs has decreased on…
