Energy Efficiency 2018
…saved more than: The world is missing opportunities to improve energy efficiency and today's policies are not delivering the full potential gains that are cost-effective and use current technology. This delayed action on energy efficiency ends up locking in inefficiencies that mean much stronger action needs to be taken in the future. 2.2 million barrels of oil per day If all countries had adopted the best passenger fuel economy standards. 16% of industry electricity use If all countries had adopted the strongest electric motor standards. $20 billion If everyone had purchased the top 10% most efficient refrigerators…

Fuel economy in India
…profile and analysis of fuel consumption trends Light-duty vehicle (LDV) sales have contracted in India since 2017, with 3.2 million sold in 2019. Nevertheless, India remains the fifth-largest LDV market. Average fuel consumption of new LDVs dropped from 6.9 litres of gasoline equivalent per 100 kilometres (Lge/100 km) in 2005 to 5.7 Lge/100 km in 2019, which is 20% below the global average. This is mainly attributable to a high share of diesel LDVs and an average LDV weight that is 24% lower than the global average.Fuel economy has improved since 2005…

Implementing Clean Energy Transitions
…in order to assess where gaps may arise and help governments and policymakers to explore other international policy experiences. The library groups transport policies within three overarching categories:Regulation, incl. standards and mandates: This includes fuel-economy standards, emission standards, blending mandates, charging standards and EV mandates. Incentives: This includes for both cases incentives for electric vehicle, modal shift, biofuels and scrappage schemes. Fuel excise taxes and carbon pricing are also included in this category.Information: This includes policies and initiatives focused on informing consumers, training, and networking. This library builts on the joint IEA/IRENA Policy and Measures database…

Railway Handbook 2015
Produced in collaboration with the Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer The collaboration of the IEA and the UIC in collecting, elaborating, and presenting activity, energy, and CO2 emissions data was carried out for the fourth time through the release of the Railway Handbook 2015. For this edition, significant methodological improvements were implemented leading to better consistency between the different indicators presented in this Handbook, in addition to updates of the global data, as well as regional breakdowns for those regions that we consider the most relevant from the point of view of transport activity: European Union, USA, Japan, Russia…

The Role of Gas in Today's Energy Transitions
World Energy Outlook special report This World Energy Outlook special report examines the role of fuel switching, primarily from coal to natural gas, to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and air pollutants. Four case studies, covering the United States, the European Union, the People’s Republic of China, and India, reveal the various opportunities, hurdles and limits of fuel switching as a way to address environmental challenges. Natural gas is one of the mainstays of global energy. Where it replaces more polluting fuels, it improves air quality and limits emissions of carbon dioxide. In this analysis, we explore how widespread…

Energy Efficiency Outlook for India: Sizing up the opportunity
This report was produced as part of the Energy Efficiency in Emerging Economies (E4) Programme which is managed by the Energy Efficiency Division of the IEA.This analysis aims to inform government, businesses and other stakeholders about the prospects for energy use in India and the role that energy efficiency improvements offer in the period to 2040. It quantifies the potential energy savings and related CO2 emission reductions, and the associated costs and benefits of policies aimed at exploiting that potential. The report also includes energy efficiency policy recommendations for each sector covered.

Clean Energy Transitions Programme 2023
…global level to enable and accelerate clean energy transitions. The CETP Annual Report 2023 provides an overview of the programme’s achievements over the past year. The remarkable impact of the CETP’s work during this period was reflected in several notable achievements, including the announcement of a new set of fuel standards for trucks in Indonesia, the Energy Transition Plan in Uganda and the establishment of regulations for the spot electricity market in China. These and other policies announced in 2023 were all closely aligned with IEA recommendations and reinforced the Agency’s status as a trusted advisor to…

Biofuel Policy in Brazil, India and the United States
Insights for the Global Biofuel Alliance As part of its G20 presidency, India has proposed a Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA) to bring countries together to expand and create new markets for sustainable biofuels. The sharing of best practices, the technical support and the capacity building that the GBA would bring are welcome additions to international efforts to expand sustainable biofuel production and use, a key step to decarbonising transportation and heat services with secure and affordable energy supplies. This report aims to inform and focus the Alliance’s work by sharing biofuel policy insights from Brazil, India and the United…

Global EV Outlook 2020
…electric vehicles are expanding significantly. Ambitious policy announcements have been critical in stimulating the electric-vehicle rollout in major vehicle markets in recent years. In 2019, indications of a continuing shift from direct subsidies to policy approaches that rely more on regulatory and other structural measures – including zero-emission vehicles mandates and fuel economy standards – have set clear, long-term signals to the auto industry and consumers that support the transition in an economically sustainable manner for governments. After entering commercial markets in the first half of the decade, electric car sales have soared. Only about 17 000 electric cars…

Air quality and climate policy integration in India
…warming climate with potentially devastating effects in the long term. Energy-related fuel combustion is at the heart of both crises. It is a main source of three major air pollutants, NOX, SO2 and PM2.5, and the largest contributor to India’s CO2 emissions. In many locations, concentrations of particulate matter persistently exceed recommended national and international standards with severe implications for public health.
In 2019 alone, India experienced an estimated 1.2 million air pollution-related premature deaths. At the same time, India’s growing economy is driving CO2 emissions, which increased by more than 55% in the…
