Implementing Clean Energy Transitions
Focus on road transport in emerging economies This report assesses the impact of the road transport sector on energy demand, CO2 emissions and air pollution in several selected major emerging economies over the coming decades under several IEA modelling scenarios. Most notably the Announced Pledges Scenario (APS) aims to show to what extent announced ambitions and targets, including the most recent ones, are on the path to deliver emissions reductions required to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.Bringing about a road transport decarbonisation pathway in line with the APS in the selected major emerging economies - Brazil, People’s Republic…

Clean Energy Transitions Programme 2022
Annual report 2022 In the five years since its launch, the Clean Energy Transitions Programme (CETP) has become the largest and most important programme at the International Energy Agency (IEA). It has been the main vehicle through which the IEA has established, deepened and strengthened partnerships with major non-member countries – those countries that are at the forefront of the clean energy transition. The programme has also played a crucial role in enabling the IEA to strengthen its global leadership role in clean energy transitions at a pace and scale that would otherwise not have been possible, with great benefit…

Decarbonisation Pathways for Southeast Asia
G7 report The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Institute of Energy Economic, Japan (IEEJ) have developed and published long-term decarbonisation pathways for Southeast Asia and Indonesia. This paper provides a comparison of modelling approaches, quantitative drivers, and results from the IEA and IEEJ pathways, highlighting areas of agreement, as well as identifying and explaining differences, and thereby to derive implications. The IEA pathway used in the comparison is the Announced Pledges Scenario (APS) from the World Energy Outlook 2022 and the Energy Sector Roadmap to Net Zero Emissions in Indonesia. The IEEJ pathway is the net zero CO2…

A Vision for Clean Cooking Access for All
World Energy Outlook Special Report Nearly one in three people, the vast majority of them in the poorest regions of the world, still lack access to clean cooking facilities, with major ramifications for public health, local environments and socio-economic development. Inhaling hazardous smoke from traditional stoves and open fires causes millions of premature deaths annually, disproportionately affecting women and children. The arduous task of collecting firewood also hinders educational and employment opportunities and strains natural resources – compounding costs for vulnerable populations. The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the African Development Bank Group have joined forces to address this critical…

Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage in Indonesia
…utilisation and storage (CCUS) can be an important technology to help achieve that goal.Indonesia is already taking meaningful steps, finalising the first regulatory framework for CCUS in Southeast Asia in early 2023. However, for CCUS to play its diverse role in Indonesia’s decarbonisation further steps are needed to expand the current framework beyond the oil and gas sector. This policy brief examines opportunities for CCUS deployment in industry, electricity generation and fuel transformation. It offers key considerations to build out Indonesia’s existing regulatory framework to enable the decarbonisation of other sectors and put Indonesia in a position…

Navigating Indonesia’s Power System Decarbonisation with the Indonesia Just Energy Transition Partnership
…is the Comprehensive Investment and Policy Plan, published in November 2023. It details an energy transition pathway for the power sector, proposes policy reforms, provides a framework for a just energy transition and outlines financing needs and requirements. In this report, we take stock of the current power sector landscape of Indonesia, summarise IEA’s role in the JETP Secretariat and contributions to the work that led to the JETP’s Comprehensive Investment and Policy Plan. We also provide an overview of the JETP pathway as well as analysis and recommendations for the effective decarbonisation of Indonesia’s power sector.

Efficient Grid-Interactive Buildings
…region’s clean energy transition and avoid lock-in of additional fossil fuel generation. The intermittent nature of variable renewable energy and increasing deployment of distributed energy resources are putting additional pressure on existing grids. In response to these challenges, this report explores the opportunities and challenges for efficient grid-interactive buildings in the ASEAN region.Such buildings are becoming a crucial element for the global ambition to attain net zero emissions, as they can combine enhanced energy efficiency, advanced smart digital technologies and decarbonised electricity generation. This integration creates the potential for buildings to shift from energy-intensive consumers…
