Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage in Indonesia
…with coal playing a large role in both. Young power plants and industrial facilities producing cement, iron and steel will need clean energy alternatives and energy efficiency measures in order for Indonesia to reach its net zero emissions by 2060 target. Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) can be an important technology to help achieve that goal.Indonesia is already taking meaningful steps, finalising the first regulatory framework for CCUS in Southeast Asia in early 2023. However, for CCUS to play its diverse role in Indonesia’s decarbonisation further steps are needed to expand the current framework beyond the oil…

Clean Energy Transitions Programme 2022
…the programme’s major achievements in the last year. During this time, the CETP has driven forward an ambitious and impactful agenda, even as the world has contended with multiple overlapping crises. As just some examples, the CETP delivered the Energy Sector Roadmap to Net Zero Emissions in Indonesia, which ministers strongly welcomed at the G20, and has played a key role in shaping Indonesia’s landmark Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). Similarly, the IEA has been able to take its engagement to a whole new level with various African countries, such as with its first-ever report on the…

Decarbonisation Pathways for Southeast Asia
…Southeast Asia and Indonesia. This paper provides a comparison of modelling approaches, quantitative drivers, and results from the IEA and IEEJ pathways, highlighting areas of agreement, as well as identifying and explaining differences, and thereby to derive implications. The IEA pathway used in the comparison is the Announced Pledges Scenario (APS) from the World Energy Outlook 2022 and the Energy Sector Roadmap to Net Zero Emissions in Indonesia. The IEEJ pathway is the net zero CO2 emissions in 2050 or 2060 case (CN2050/2060) from the Decarbonisation of ASEAN Energy Systems: Optimum Technology Selection Model Analysis up to 2060 study.

Navigating Indonesia’s Power System Decarbonisation with the Indonesia Just Energy Transition Partnership
Indonesia is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and with its rapidly growing energy demand, abundant energy and mineral resources, it is set to play a key role in the global economic and energy landscape. Decarbonising its power system has been identified as a key enabler to achieve its pledge for net zero emissions by 2060, as coal power dominates its electricity mix. To support Indonesia’s power sector decarbonisation efforts, the Just Energy Transition Partnership was established during a G20 summit in Bali, in November 2022. The first deliverable of the Just Energy Transition Partnership, which…

A Vision for Clean Cooking Access for All
…cooking technologies. Yet in sub-Saharan Africa, there are a rising number of people without access to cleaner stoves and fuels, largely because population growth is outpacing gains. This could hinder broader development efforts, making it imperative to elevate clean cooking as a policy priority. The report presents country-by-country assessments and an outlook for clean cooking under existing policies, offering a roadmap towards universal access. By identifying the required policies, technologies, investments and implementation efforts, the report seeks to galvanise international support for clean cooking initiatives, informing conversations ahead of the UN Sustainable Development Goal Summit, the African…

Efficient Grid-Interactive Buildings
…are putting additional pressure on existing grids. In response to these challenges, this report explores the opportunities and challenges for efficient grid-interactive buildings in the ASEAN region.Such buildings are becoming a crucial element for the global ambition to attain net zero emissions, as they can combine enhanced energy efficiency, advanced smart digital technologies and decarbonised electricity generation. This integration creates the potential for buildings to shift from energy-intensive consumers to low-carbon prosumers, empowered by digital technologies that can offer flexibility benefits to the electricity grids. With the ability to produce, consume, store, sell and buy energy…
