        Vehicle Labeling Scheme

        South Africa enacted a labelling scheme in  2008 to support the alignment of vehciles with emissions standards and enable consumers to evaluate their purchase options based on their prospective emissions. The scheme requiers car dealers  to display stickers on new vehicles that indicate its fuel economy (l/100km) and CO2 emissions in (g/km).

        2022 General Fuel Levy freeze & reduction

        In order to cushion domestic consumers and the national economy from the effects of oil price rise, the South African government decided in February 2023 to freeze the general fuel levy on petrol and diesel.A month later, this support was enhanced with a temporary reduction in the general fuel levy of ZAR 1.50/ litre, enacted from April until the end of May 2022.

        National Energy Efficiency Strategy Post 2015

        Excise Taxes for Petroleum Products

        The General Fuel levy applies to petroleum products' consumption in South Africa, including petrol, diesel, biodiesel, unmarked aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents and unmarked illuminating kerosene (unmarked paraffin). These products are subject to the payment of a General fuel levy and road accident fund (RAF) levy. In December 2021, these levies were estimated to weight 30% of petrol price (19% and 11% respectively). Rates surged over the 2008-2022 period, fivefolding the RAF levy (R 2.18/L in December 2021) and tripling the general fuel levy (R 3.93/L). The general fuel levy generated R80 billion for government in 2019…

        Energy Efficiency Strategy of the Republic of South Africa

        The NEES outlined how an overall energy intensity reduction target of 12% by 2015 could be achieved with the following sectoral energy efficiency improvement targets. The Implementation plans were drawn up for each of the sectors with forecasted targets of energy use reductions based upon assumptions about energy demand over the next 10 years (2005 – 2015 using the 2000 year baselines), including the associated drivers, such as the economic development and population growth.

        Regulations Regarding the Mandatory Blending of Bio-fuels with Petrol and Diesel (Government Notice No. R. 671)

        The regulation sets out the requirements and conditions for the mandatory blending of bioethanol and biodiesel with petrol and diesel respectively that may be sold in the Republic of South Africa. It lists:A minimum concentration for biodiesel blending of 5% v/v. For bio-ethanol blending, a minimum level of 2% v/v and a maximum level of 10% v/v.The above requirements came into effect in 2015.In 2020, this regulation was ammended to include 2nd-generation biofuels (from crop and forest residues) and 3rd-generation biofuels (derived from algae).
