IEA responding to major global energy security threat
…oil markets
The IEA is responding to the widespread energy market impacts of the conflict in the Middle East https://www.iea.org/topics/the-middle-east-and-global-energy-markets. The disruptions to oil and gas flows and to energy infrastructure in the region have major implications for energy security and affordability – and for the world economy.

The mega batteries transforming power systems
…In these places, batteries are increasingly available to meet demand when it peaks, such as in the late afternoon or early evening.
Battery costs continue to fall, enhancing their competitiveness, and pairing technologies such as solar with battery storage is becoming more common. A large global pipeline of announced projects indicates that interest from investors remains strong.
However, many utility-scale battery projects face multi-year delays in securing grid connection and permitting. Projects can also have uncertain or volatile revenue streams, and they may struggle to access affordable financing. In this context, greater efforts to reduce market barriers and… -

Tackling rare earth supply risks
…disruptions.
Rare earths underpin a wide range of technologies, from electric vehicles and AI data centres to robotics, aerospace and defence systems. Demand for rare earths has grown sharply in recent years, mostly due to the growing deployment across sectors of high-performance permanent magnets.
Yet the production of rare earths is hugely concentrated geographically – including for neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium, which are used in these magnets. Today, China accounts for around 60% of global mined production of these elements – and its share of refining for them is above 90%. The country also accounts for almost 95% of permanent… -

…meanwhile, have gradually rebalanced https://www.iea.org/reports/gas-market-report-q1-2026 in recent years following the major shock that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. A wave of new LNG capacity https://www.iea.org/data-and-statistics/data-tools/global-lng-capacity-tracker between now and the end of this decade is expected to transform market dynamics. But markets remained tight in the first two months of 2026, and depleted storage coming out of the heating season in the Northern Hemisphere is set to increase the call on LNG in the months ahead…

How the crisis is reshaping energy investment
…is changing risk perceptions and bolstering moves towards greater diversification. Coming just a few years after the energy crisis centred around Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, today’s supply shock is expected to leave a lasting imprint on future investment priorities – particularly in Asia and the Middle East, where the impacts of the disruptions to shipping flows through the Strait of Hormuz have been felt most acutely.
The report projects that global energy investment will reach $3.4 trillion in 2026, a slight increase year-on-year. Around $2.2 trillion is expected to go towards grids, storage… -
