Energy Technology Supply Chains in Southeast Asia
An Energy Technology Perspectives Special Report
About this report
Southeast Asia will play a central role in the future of the global energy system. The region’s energy demand has increased by nearly 140% over the past quarter-century, and it is set to account for around one-fifth of global energy demand growth over the next decade under stated policy settings. Secure and resilient supply chains for key energy technologies, such as solar PV, wind, electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries, will be central to sustaining this growth, as will identifying opportunities to reap the economic benefits that can accompany these new supply chains.
The region already has a strong foundation to build on, with the second-largest solar PV manufacturing capacity globally and a rapidly growing EV and battery manufacturing sector. Many Southeast Asian countries have the ambition to play a more active role in the supply chains for these technologies, increasing the domestic share of value addition and employment associated with their development. Achieving this goal can also avoid undue dependence on a single source of supply to the region, and at the same time contribute to increased supply chain diversification globally.
This Energy Technology Perspectives Special Report examines recent trends in clean energy technology manufacturing, trade and investment in Southeast Asia, building on analysis conducted for Energy Technology Perspectives 2026. The analysis draws on the latest information on energy, climate, trade and industrial policies – as well as manufacturing project announcements – to inform projections for clean energy technology manufacturing and trade in the region and put forward key considerations to guide effective industrial strategy design.
