In 2017, Japan introduced auction system for awarding fixed tariff to large-scale solar PV projects. Projects selected through bidding competition receive 20-year long Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

All PV projects larger than 2 MW were subjected to the renewable capacity auctions until 3rd Auction around. From 4th Auction around, the project capacity threshold is reduced from 2 MW to 500kW.
