The Coal Mining Abatement Technology Support Package (CMATSP) was a grant of AUD 70 million from the federal government used to support merit based grants and supported projects that developed ventilation air methane process technologies. The aim was to maintain and enhance the international competitiveness and viability of the Australian coal mining sector to meet Australia's greenhouse reduction targets. The funds were directed at three elements: research, development and demonstration of technologies and processes associated with coal mining greenhouse gas mitigation including the measurement and monitoring of emissions, avoidance and abatement technologies; work to address safety and regulatory issues associated with the development and deployment of greenhouse mitigation related technologies, equipment and processes; and assistance to small and medium coal sector participants to develop abatement strategies or undertake feasibility studies to reduce emissions from current and proposed mines.

The CMATSP was part of the Coal Sector Assistance Package developed by the Australian Government to support the small number of existing coal mines that faced significant costs with the implementation of the carbon price in 2012 (this was repealed in 2014). The program was administered by the now-defunct Department of Resources, Energy, and Tourism.
