India-Italy Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation on Critical Minerals

India and Italy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of critical minerals. The MoU envisages cooperation to support sustainable and secure exploration, extraction, processing and recycling of critical minerals, with a focus on sustainability and supply chain resilience. 

Areas of cooperation set out in the MoU include: 

  • sharing and co-development of technologies for exploration, extraction, processing and recycling;
  • promotion of advanced technologies, best practices, and capacity building;
  • support for secure supplies of responsibly produced critical minerals;
  • investment promotion;
  • cooperation on offshore mineral exploration and extraction technologies; and 
  • collaboration on the valorisation of abandoned mining sites. 

The pathways for cooperation include investment and trade promotion, business-to-business matchmaking, engagement with industry, academia and research institutions, and training and knowledge-sharing activities.
