Building (Exempt Roof-mounted Solar Panel Arrays and Building Work) Order 2025

This order provides for the exemption from the need for a building consent for the installation of Roof Mounted Solar panels arrays. Prior to the introduction of this set of exemptions into the Building Act 2004 schedule of exempt work (Schedule 1), roof mounted solar arrays were excluded from schedule and required a building consent for the supporting structure. This exemption makes it clear to Building Consent Authorities, building owners and installers that these types of installations do not require a building consent. The exemption removes a barrier to the uptake of onsite solar power generation and reduces the cost of compliance.
