Sustainable Aviation Fuel Expansion Strategy

Source: International Energy Agency
Last updated: 24 June 2026

The SAF Expansion Strategy promotes domestic production and use of sustainable aviation fuel to decarbonise aviation and prepare for international emissions requirements. Korea launched its first commercial domestic SAF-fuelled flight operation, becoming the 20th country globally and the 4th in Asia to conduct commercial SAF fuelling. The strategy supports voluntary early use, production investment and the development of a blending pathway. It prepares for a 1% SAF blending requirement for departing international flights from 2027, linking Korea’s refinery and aviation sectors to global aviation decarbonisation rules.
