National Renewable Energy Strategy (2024-2034)

The National Renewable Energy Strategy (2024-2034) establishes Tanzania’s framework for expanding renewable energy deployment across the electricity system and other sectors. The strategy sets targets to increase renewable generation capacity by 2034, including 804 MW of solar power, 750 MW of wind power, 215 MW of geothermal capacity, and 3,281 MW of large hydropower, alongside additional renewable energy from small power projects such as 200 MW of mini-hydro, 119.8 MW of solar SPPs, and about 85 MW of biomass waste-to-energy projects. It also promotes renewable applications for cooking, agriculture and water supply, and calls for regulatory frameworks for e-mobility and renewable-powered e-cooking by 2027, as well as an assessment of green hydrogen potential by 2030.
