Regulatory proposals for geologic hydrogen

The Government is currently reviewing regulations to determine whether changes are needed to support natural hydrogen exploration and the development of orange hydrogen. Any updates to the regulatory framework are expected to begin in mid-2025. Two main options are being considered: one would classify hydrogen as a mineral, giving private owners the rights to develop it; the other would exclude hydrogen from that definition, allowing its development to focus on broader goals like reducing emissions or enhancing energy security.
