Modernisation Grant (Nachhaltige Modernisierung von Binnenschiffe)

Program supports the decarbonization of inland vessels including dual-fuel engines and low-emission propulsion systems. Incentive: For emission-free vehicles: up to 100% of eligible costs for new builds, up to 80% for retrofitting. The first round was launched in July 2021 and the sixth round in November 2023. From 2024, the funding programme for the sustainable modernization of inland vessels will consist of three funding guidelines due to current developments in EU state aid law, namely the “Directive on the promotion of the sustainable modernization of inland vessels for the transfer of freight transport from road to waterway”, the “Directive on the promotion of emission-free and low-emission propulsion systems and the sustainable modernization of inland vessels” and the “Directive on the promotion of retrofitting of emission reduction equipment on inland vessels”. On January 1, 2027, the three funding guidelines are to be merged back into one. Within the second funding guideline a first call has been launched in March 2024
