Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Cluster Sequencing Process - Track 1
UK has the target of selecting 4 CCUS clusters for development by 2030. In November 2021, two clusters were selected under Track-1: HyNet and East Coast. Phase-1 was the selection of the clusters, while Phase-2 was the application of specific projects within those clusters. The shortlist of projects (Phase 2) was published in August 2022 with the final selection in March 2023 (3 in the East Coast Cluster and 5 in the HyNet Cluster)
In October 2024, the government announced up to GBP 21.7 billion of funding over 25 years for the two Track-1 clusters which could mobilize GBP 8 billion of private investment. In December 2024, FID was taken for two components of the East Coast Cluster, the CO2 network and the hydrogen use for power (Net Zero Teesside Power). Construction of this cluster is supposed to start in 2025 with COD in 2028. CO2 network capacity is initially 4 mtpa with a potential future capacity of 23 mtpa. For HyNet, the application for specific projects was closed in March 2024, projects were shortlisted in September 2024 and a publication of the project negotiation list is expected by Spring 2025
