Technological development of the Yamanashi model, a decarbonized energy network using hydrogen as a heat source

Source: International Energy Agency
Last updated: 05 September 2025
The NEDO project in Yamanashi Prefecture focuses on producing hydrogen using a large-scale PEM water electrolysis system powered by surplus renewable energy, particularly solar power. The hydrogen is utilized in industrial processes, heating, and as fuel for hydrogen boilers and fuel cells. The project also optimizes hydrogen transportation and storage with advanced composite containers, aiming to replace fossil fuels in hard-to-electrify sectors, enhance local energy self-sufficiency, and stimulate the regional economy.
