South Australia - Construction of a hydrogen power station, electrolyser and storage facility within the Whyalla City Council
A $593 million (USD 378 million) plan over four years will fund a 200 MW hydrogen power station, 250 MW electrolyser, and 100-ton storage facility in Whyalla. The facility is expected to be operational in 2026 and supports the State’s goal of reaching net 100% renewable energy by 2027.
In 2024, development approval was granted by both State and Commonwealth regulators, including environmental and cultural heritage considerations. The government signed a contract with GE Vernova to supply four 100% hydrogen-ready gas turbines.
The government will delay investment in the electrolyser due to issues at the local steel plant. The turbines can still operate on natural gas if the electrolyser is not built.
