Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III) - Sectoral quotas
The EU Renewable Energy Directive is an EU level legislation setting out the rules for governance of the renewable energy sector and setting a target for renewable energy consumption in the EU by 2030, including while not limited to hydrogen. RED sets a binding target for the use of RFNBO (renewable fuels of non-biological origin) in industry: 42% in 2030 and 60% in 2035 (art. 22a) with possible discounts in case certain conditions are fullfilled (art.22b). Article 25 requires that by 2030, Member States set out measures that allow increasinge the share of RFNBOs to at least 1% of total energy consumption in transport by 2030. (RFNBOs also contribute towards a combined target of 5.5% for RFNBOs and advanced biofuels as well as the sectorial targets)
