Obligation to make the public lighting system more efficient

Source: International Energy Agency
Last updated: 27 May 2025

The intention is to build an energy efficiency program, starting first and foremost with public lighting. In this sector, the program will include a set of interventions, aimed at Local Public Bodies, aimed at accelerating the ongoing process for the replacement of light sources and the installation of consumption monitoring systems, together with a more efficient reprogramming of the hours of use. In this regard, the Budget Law for 2018 established that public bodies are required to upgrade public lighting systems by 31 December 2023, ensuring a reduction in electricity consumption of at least 50% compared to the average consumption in 2015-2016. The companies involved in the development of the interventions can take advantage of the incentives provided by the Revolving Fund for the support of companies and investments in research, where 300 million euros have been allocated for the granting of subsidized loans.
