In November 2024, at COP29, the European Commission (with support from partner countries, international organisations, NGOs and development banks) launched the Methane Abatement Partnership Roadmap

The Roadmap seeks to minimize methane emissions in the oil and gas value chain through six measures: (1) establishing cooperation frameworks between exporting and importing countries; (2) support the adoption of systems to enhance transparency of measurement-based emissions data; (3) encouraging the strengthening or development of methane policies and regulations, including robust MRV systems; (4) work with operators to build plans to abate methane emissions from existing fossil fuel assets; (5) secure investments for emission reduction projects in producing countries; and (6) follow-up on implementation of the cooperation framework to ensure that emissions were reduced.
