Turkiye- Energy Supply Security 2023
As per the 2023 Energy Supply Security Program, The following activities are carried out:
- The Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) serves as a key component of the Southern Gas Corridor connecting Türkiye and Europe. As of the end of April 2026, approximately 38 bcm of natural gas had been supplied to Türkiye, while 57.87 bcm had been delivered to Europe via TANAP. The TurkStream Natural Gas Pipeline directly connects Russian natural gas supplies to Türkiye and onward to European markets. As of the end of April 2026, approximately 82.44 bcm of natural gas had been delivered to Europe through TurkStream.
- Nuclear Power Plants: As part of the "Agreement on Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Government of the Russian Federation on the Establishment and Operation of a Nuclear Power Plant at the Akkuyu Field in the Republic of Türkiye" signed in 2010, 4 nuclear reactors with total capacity of 4800 MW are being planned to be implemented. Until now, construction permits have been granted for all reactors of the Akkuyu NPP, the commissioning permit for the 1st Unit was granted in November 2023, and for the 2nd Unit was granted in March 2026. Besides, fresh nuclear fuel for Unit 1 was delivered to the Akkuyu site in April 2023, and nuclear fuel for Unit 2 was delivered in December 2024. As of May 2026, all the reactors are under construction, and all units are expected to begin producing energy by the end of 2028. For the second and third large scale NPP Projects, negotiations with vendor countries are on-going. Also, SMRs are on the agenda of Türkiye in order to ensure the net-zero target within next 30 years.
