National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) 2020
The NECB sets out the technical requirements for the energy-efficient design and construction of new buildings and additions. This stand-alone code applies to Part 3 buildings - large buildings that are 600 m2 or more in floor area or four storeys or more in height, such as office space, hospitals, and high-rise residential. Developed with significant support from NRCan, the current 2020 edition includes several enhancements over the previous 2017 edition. This includes a performance compliance path with 4 tiers, each successive tier being increasingly stringent in terms of building energy consumption, with the highest tier yielding at least a 60% reduction in energy consumption over the baseline tier.
Subject to approval, further enhancements are developed and proposed for the 2025 edition, including technical requirements to address both energy efficient alterations to existing buildings and operational GHG emissions in new construction. Publication is set for late 2025.
