After a consultation process, Australia started on 10th December a 18-months period of trials for the hydrogen Guarantee of Origin scheme. This scheme will support future trade in clean hydrogen by informing customers about the emissions associated with the hydrogen they buy; the energy source and type of technology used will also be provided. The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources and the Clean Energy Regulator will lead the voluntary trials. The guarantee of origin is built on the methodologies established by the IPHE, in collaboration with the Australian Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources. The 2021–22 Budget provided $9.7 million for the trials, with the Australian Government now investing more than $1.2 billion to accelerate the development of an Australian hydrogen industry.
Australia's Clean Energy Regulator (CER) said in November 2022 that the proposed hydrogen guarantee of origin scheme should be ready for implementation in 2024.
