Second Nationally Determined Contribution of the United Arab Emirates

Last updated: 8 March 2024

The second nationally determined contribution (NDC) updates the first NDC (submitted in 2015). The United Arab Emirates (UAE) intends to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 23.5% compared to a business-as-usual scenario. The NDC includes several abatement measures and tackles different sectors, including power generation, energy efficiency, oil and gas, transport, waste management, water resources management.

Concerning the oil and gas sector, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) announced a target to decrease its greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 25% by 2030. ADNOC operates all oil and gas fields in the UAE. The target includes energy efficiency measures, a zero-flaring policy, and carbon capture and storage. The company aims to utilize recovered gas and send it to the downstream value chain. The NDC also indicates that the country's oil and gas sector deploys optical imagery, infra-red technologies, and leak detection and repair procedures to monitor and manage fugitive emissions across it's oil and gas value chain.
