The government agreed that biogas plants for electricity production will be eligible to receive support from the Climate Leap initiative (Klimatklivet). The decision was taken to achieve Sweden’s goal of a full renewable electricity production.

The measure is intended to reduce methane GHG emissions from manure management by increasing the reliance on renewable electricity in the agriculture sector. This sector is undergoing major transformation thanks to electrification and streamlining. Farmers are given the possibility to produce renewable electricity with biogas from manure.

Fertiliser-based biogas was already eligible to receive support from the Climate Leap initiative, in case biogas was updated to vehicle gas. The new measure extends the support to the generation of renewable electricity from biogas.
