National Incubator Initiative for Clean Energy (NIICE)
The National Incubator Initiative for Clean Energy (NIICE) was launched in 2012 through grant funding from the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) to create the first nationwide support organization to connect and build a community of clean energy-focused startup incubators. From 2014-18, the awardees Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) established the network, which has since been operated privately by EPRI and funded by its utility members. Since being operated privately, Incubatenergy Labs has also been established to award competitive grants for technology demonstrations projects in a selected electric power utility. Since its creation in 2015, Incubatenergy has facilitated hundreds of engagements of innovative startups collaborating with utilities and other industry stakeholders. The network is providing a variety of services to startups in clean energy innovation, including access to laboratory space, mentoring, pilot customers, joint ventures, and private venture capital.
