California Low Carbon Fuel Standard

California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) allows transportation fuels to earn credits if their lifecycle emissions are reduced through carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). Projects must store CO₂ in approved geologic sites and meet strict monitoring requirements. Credits are based on verified emission reductions, and both capture and storage facilities must apply. Direct air capture projects can be located globally if they follow the LCFS CCS Protocol.
