More than 35 high-level participants focus on how to achieve pledges to triple global renewable capacity, double energy efficiency progress and more
Brazil’s COP30 Presidency and the International Energy Agency (IEA) today held the third in a series of High-Level Energy Transition Dialogues, which are bringing together energy and climate leaders from around the world to help shape the energy agenda and outcomes for COP30 in Belém, Brazil.
The event, held in partnership with the United Nations Climate Action Team, was co-chaired by IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, COP30 President-Designate André Corrêa do Lago and Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Climate Action and Just Transition Selwin Hart.
Taking place during the UN General Assembly in New York, it formed part of the UN Secretary-General's "solutions dialogues" for accelerating clean energy transitions. The discussions, which focused on key energy sector priorities under Brazil's COP30 Presidency, fed directly into the UN Secretary-General’s Special High-Level Event on Climate Action.
Ministers, industry leaders and civil society representatives from around the world took part. Participants included United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary Simon Stiell; Australia's Minister for Climate Change and Energy Christopher Bowen; European Commission Director-General for Energy Ditte Juul Jørgensen; Germany’s State Secretary for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Jochen Flasbarth; India’s Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Pankaj Jain; Indonesia’s Deputy Coordinating Minister for Basic Infrastructure Muhammad Rachmat Kaimuddin; Ireland Minister for Climate, Energy and Environment Darragh O’Brien; Italy’s Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Security Vannia Gava; Jamaica’s Minister of Water, Environment and Climate Change Matthew Samuda; Korea’s Ambassador and Deputy Minister for Climate Change Keeyong Chung; Tuvalu Minister of Climate Change Maina Talia; and United Kingdom Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband – as well as Global Renewables Alliance CEO Bruce Douglas, COP29 High-Level Champion Nigar Arpadarai and COP30 High-Level Champion Dan Ioschpe.
Participants spoke about pathways to implementing the global energy goals agreed in recent years, including commitments made by nearly 200 countries at COP28. The discussion covered what would be needed to triple the world’s renewable power capacity and double energy efficiency progress by 2030.
The 2025 High-Level Dialogues build upon previous editions, which helped shape the UAE Consensus reached at COP28 in Dubai and the energy outcomes of COP29 in Baku. Organised with the participation of the UNFCCC Secretariat, these Dialogues convene decision-makers to inform the energy priorities for COP30 and beyond.
