Building on a recommendation from the IEA Energy Policy Review of Brazil 2025, presented during COP30 in Belém, the IEA is providing technical support to Brazil on its plans for a national energy data strategy to enhance the relevance, integration and quality of energy data in public energy policymaking.

On 2-3 March, IEA and Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) held a joint stakeholder workshop on the Co-creation of an Energy Data Strategy for Brazil, bringing together government institutions and energy sector stakeholders.

Opening the workshop, IEA Deputy Director Mary Burce Warlick highlighted the growing importance of energy data cooperation between Brazil and the IEA. This follows an agreement by IEA member countries for Brazil to begin the accession process to the Agency. “This marks the beginning of a new chapter in IEA–Brazil cooperation, which has grown steadily since the country became an Association country in 2017. Energy data and statistics have long been a central pillar of cooperation," said Burce Warlick.

Addressing the new data strategy, Acting Secretary of Energy Transition and Planning at the MME Lorena Perim said: “More than just an initiative of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, this is a collective effort of the sector, which recognizes information as a strategic asset to ensure predictability, reliability, and the continuous improvement of institutions."

During the workshop, participants discussed key elements of the future strategy, including its vision, mission, values and objectives, while mapping challenges, identifying barriers and highlighting priority areas for improvement. The discussions will be used as an input to inform the development of the national energy data strategy, which is expected to be released for public consultation in the coming months.

Participants included representatives from several Brazilian institutions, including the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil, the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), the National System Operator of Brazil (ONS), the Energy Research Company of Brazil (EPE), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), Petrobras and the Chamber of Electric Energy Commercialization (CCEE).
