In Bucharest, Dr Fatih Birol had bilateral meetings with President Nicușor Dan, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and senior officials on enhancing cooperation and key energy topics

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol met with Romania’s Prime Minister and President in Bucharest today to discuss major energy issues and explore ways to deepen the relationship between the IEA and Romania.

Dr Birol had a comprehensive discussion with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan on Romanian and European energy matters – including support for energy security in Ukraine and Moldova, the subject of extensive IEA analysis. In a bilateral meeting at the Presidential Cotroceni Palace, President Nicușor Dan and Dr Birol reviewed recent developments in the geopolitical and energy landscapes in Europe and worldwide.

The Executive Director’s discussions with both leaders had a strong focus on the opportunities to strengthen the institutional ties between Romania and the IEA, building on years of collaboration on areas such as energy security, policy development and data.

During his visit, Dr Birol also met with Romanian Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan and State Secretary Luca Niculescu. Their discussions focused on the next steps for expanding cooperation, including how Romania can contribute to the IEA’s work on global issues such as energy reliability, affordability and sustainability. They also spoke about a range of other energy topics, including Romania’s energy priorities and their links to economic growth, the role of nuclear power, and the nexus of energy and artificial intelligence.

While in Bucharest, Dr Birol addressed the Delphi Economic Forum taking place in the city, covering topics such as natural gas, nuclear power, economic competitiveness and energy security.
