Interactive map of global biogas and biomethane potential

This map provides a first-of-a-kind analysis of the sustainable technical potential of biogas and biomethane supply globally. This assessment considers more than 40 types of feedstocks. They can be broadly grouped together as crop residues, animal manure, biowaste and woody biomass. Only feedstocks that can be used without direct competition with food production or animal feed, and that avoid adverse sustainability impacts, are included.

The evaluation leverages high-resolution spatial datasets, including: Agricultural output (GAEZ v5 FAO 2025, GLW4 FAO 2024) Population density (WorldPop, 2024 and Global Human Settlement Layer, 2025), Wastewater treatment facilities (HydroWaste, 2022). It also uses the following aggregated datasets: OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2025-2034, What a Waste 3.0 (World Bank, 2026). The potential from forestry residues is not included in this map.
