kg CO2/boe = kilogrammes of CO2 per barrel of oil equivalent. Energy for extraction includes emissions from processing to remove impurities before transport. Upstream methane includes emissions from production, gathering and processing; downstream methane includes emissions from shipping (if applicable), transmission and distribution (see IEA [2017] for further details). One tonne of methane is assumed to be equivalent to 30 tonnes of CO2 (the 100-year “global warming potential”).
