Global investment in energy efficiency by sector, 2014-2019

An energy efficiency investment is defined as the incremental spending on new energy-efficient equipment or the full cost of refurbishments that reduce energy use. The intention is to capture spending that leads to reduced energy consumption. Under conventional accounting, part of this is categorised as consumption rather than investment. The total in all years is slightly higher than that shown in WEI 2019 due to the inclusion of additional national-level data in the buildings sector. Please see WEI 2020 methodology document.
