Climate change policies in the Transport Sector : Biofuel blends, Clean Car Import Standard
In order to tackle climate change and to help New Zealand meet its 2050 climate neutrality target, the Government took several targeted action on the transport sector, as it is the second highest amount of emissions after agriculture in New Zealand. Three main policies and measures have been announced: - After consulting an independent Climate Change Commission mid-year, the Government agreed to mandate a lower emitting biofuel blend across the transport sector. Government Investment in Decarbonising (GIDI) Fund: Fonterra
In 2023, the New Zealand government announced an agreement with Fonterra Dairies to replace coal boilers used in the company's factories with wood-pellet powered boilers. This project will be funded in part (NZD 90 million) by the New Zealand government through the Government Investment in Decarbonising (GIDI) Fund.

Russia Sanctions Act 2022
In 2022, New Zealand announced a range of sanctions and trade measures against Russia in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.The sanctions include export and import prohibitions as well as a 35% tariff on all Russian imports into New Zealand. Export prohibitions are also applied to energy products such as ammonia, photovoltaic cells not assembled and other photosensitive semiconductor devices, hydrogen, primary cells and primary batteries of manganese dioxide, heat pumps, among other products.

Low Carbon Energy Technologies Fund
The low carbon energy technologies (LCET) fund supports research for New Zealand related to the scale-up and demonstration of existing research on second generation biofuels, other low carbon liquid biofuels and low carbon energy technologies. The LCET scheme will invest in research that leads to scale-up and demonstration of technology to an investor ready stage, assesses the environmental and socio-economic impacts of these technologies, and demonstrates the potential to reduce New Zealand's carbon dioxide emissions from the energy sector, including electricity and transport energy. In February 2007, the New Zealand government announced a plan for the public service to go carbon neutral. Further details were provided throughout 2007, including in the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy, released in October 2007. Electricity Industry Reform Act Amendment
In September 2008, the New Zealand Parliament amended the Electricity Industry Reform Act of 1998 (EIRA). While generally requiring separation of monopoly electricity lines and competitive generation and retailing business, the amendment creates more favourable conditions for electricity generation using renewable energy resources. The amendment seeks to encourage lines companies to invest in permitted generation, particularly renewable generation.
