Workshop on Renewables Integration

Background information

The buildout of renewable energy is gathering pace. Global renewable energy capacity additions in 2023 increased by almost 50% to nearly 510 gigawatts (GW), the fastest growth rate in decades. Within the next five years, the IEA forecasts that global renewable capacity will reach 7 300 GW, driven by rapid expansions of solar PV and wind. And ambitions are increasing every year, with governments pledging to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030 at COP28.

The successful integration of variable renewables such as solar PV and wind into power systems will be key to sustaining this momentum and tapping into its full benefits. There is a wealth of technical and market experience to support strong renewable ambitions, and sharing challenges and innovative solutions can help quickly identify priorities and best practices.

On 9 April, the IEA will bring together experts from across government, industry, academia and regulators to determine what steps are needed today to build the clean, reliable power systems of tomorrow. The discussions will help identify strategies for policy makers to advance the integration of variable renewables – including those that support flexibility and stability in systems with high renewable shares; the effective deployment of consumer-side resources; and increasing financing for clean energy transitions. The findings from this workshop will serve as an essential input for an IEA publication later this year.
