Energy efficiency can play a key role in achieving broad policy objectives, including economic growth, competitiveness, and social welfare. Designing effective energy efficiency policies requires evidence on energy balances, energy consumption and behaviour. Data and indicators are essential tools to inform the design of effective public policies and to track progress over time. In other words, they are “smart tools for smart savings.”
This workshop was part of a series of engagements by IEA that were undertaken with the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER) and Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy (CONUEE) to strengthen cooperation around data and indicators. In March 2018, IEA launched the Energy Efficiency Indicators Online Training Courses in Mexico City. Stakeholders then had several months to take the online course in preparation for the September workshop.
The workshop aimed to stimulate further dialogue among diverse government ministries and departments, as well as independent experts, think-tanks and key stakeholders. It built on the methodologies presented in the online course to engage more deeply in the process of defining indicators and collecting data on energy consumption in Mexico. It supported discussion around gaps and opportunities for further cooperation among relevant actors on the development of data and indicators in Mexico.
A total of 54 people participated in the workshop, with attendees from the federal, state and local government, research centres, energy utilities, international agencies, and the finance sector.
