The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) together ran a key workshop focused on "Decarbonising Oil: the role of CO2-EOR". The aim of the event was to discuss the potential for using CO2-EOR for CO2 storage and increasing oil production also known as "EOR+" or advanced CO2-EOR.
This two-day workshop brought together 60 participants including public policy makers, researchers, industry experts and IEA and KAPSARC representatives to discuss ways for CO2-EOR to play a meaningful role in national energy production and emissions reductions.
The CO2-EOR workshop heard presentations across various technical and non-technical aspects on advanced CO2-EOR. The workshop also allowed, under Chatham House rules, a free exchange of views especially on the challenges and opportunities for countries to incrementally increase oil production and reduce their CO2 emissions captured from various anthropogenic sources by storing permanently CO2 underground.
The IEA and KAPSARC joint workshop will inform upcoming work on these key aspects of advanced CO2-EOR including future publications and targeted workshops from both organizations, on this important topic.
