Background

Steel is a vital material in modern economies and global demand for steel is expected to continue to grow to meet rising social and economic welfare needs. Meeting societal steel demand presents challenges to iron and steel producers as it navigates between environmental and competitiveness pressures and opportunities. The iron and steel sector is responsible for about 9% of global final energy demand and almost 7% of CO2 emissions. Through innovation, iron & steel producers have a major opportunity to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, develop more sustainable products and enhance their competitiveness.

In the framework of the IEA Global Sustainable Technology Roadmap for the Iron & Steel sector, which was kicked-off last November in Paris, the International Energy Agency, in collaboration with the Brazil Steel Institute, coordinated an American Steel Experts Dialogue on 22 August 2018, in São Paulo, Brazil. This event brought together leading experts and key stakeholders from industry, government and the research community in the region. The aim of the workshop was to explore the main challenges the iron and steel sector is facing today in North America and South America, and which innovative technologies and strategies could support the sustainable transformation of steel production in the region.
